Actor, director and producer. Theater and the arts are my way of understanding human experience.

my journey

I studied theater at Universidad Mayor in Santiago, from 2013 to 2016. I was trained as an actor, but I never really felt like one, so I started exploring directing. After drama school I directed Animales binarios and Pero, ¿y mi madre?, and was assistant director on Todo bajo control.

From 2020 to 2022, I did a master’s in theater studies and practices at the Universidad Católica de Chile, researching the ethical relationship between artist and audience. What I look for on stage is truth: no pretending, only what is really happening in the present. That took me from plays to performance, starting from the most intimate place so it can resonate with each spectator’s own story.

I also learned to run projects: I produced the Juan Radrigán inter-school playwriting festival from 2015 to 2018, and for Caminamos mirando al cielo, a sound walk made during the pandemic, I wrote my first application to Fondart, Chile’s national arts fund, and won it. And I taught, as a teaching assistant in directing at Universidad Mayor and in applied theater at the UC. When I moved to France, I stepped away from the stage, but not from creating.

my projects

  • Caminamos mirando al cielo

We walk looking at the sky

    • Poster for Caminamos mirando al cielo: a figure floats backwards above the water at dusk, reaching for a star.
    • A listener with headphones rides an escalator down through the Costanera Center mall.
    • A listener at the start of the walk, outside the Costanera Center.

Creator, co-writer and director; producer · 2020–2022 · Costanera Center, Santiago. Master’s final project (UC). Process exhibition at Teatro del Puente. Funded by Fondart.

Listeners signed up, stood outside the Costanera Center and pressed play on their own phone. For an hour, a voice guided them through the mall’s five floors, asking them to walk, touch, clap, take photos. The building is known for the people who have died there by suicide: the piece invites you to walk it as a place of memory, and shares mental-health information and where to find help. Loosely inspired by Greek myths (Odysseus, Narcissus, Pandora, Hestia).

  • Animales binarios

    • Silhouette of a performer in a large fur animal mask, pulling back a pink curtain.
    • A performer in a fur animal mask lies on pink fabric, holding a red shoe, with glasses nearby.
    • A face half hidden between pink curtains, in warm light.

    Director · 2017–2018 · Santiago de Chile

Three intertwined monologues by playwright Carla Fuentes Abu-Abbarah: three queer characters with a shared past revisit their childhood, its abuse and its loneliness, looking for a way out. I directed the piece and led the project as a whole, from building the team to finding the funding. It ran for 32 performances between October 2017 and mid-2018.

  • Todo bajo control

    Everything under control

    • A row of legs in beige skirts and heels on a blue stage floor, one foot out of its shoe.
    • A cashier in a blue apron smokes in the foreground while three colleagues dance behind.
    • A man in a white shirt and blue tie sits holding a yellow ball, surrounded by three laughing cashiers.

Assistant director · 2017–2019 · Santiago de Chile, in several theaters over three years of touring

Five cashiers at a supermarket in an upscale Santiago neighborhood face Christmas Eve and a workers’ strike at the same time. How far would you go to save Christmas? Do you work to live, or live to work? Written by Javiera Mendoza and directed by Juan Gálvez, the play won the drama school’s internal creation fund, then toured Santiago theaters until 2019. I was assistant director.

  • Pero, ¿y mi madre?

    But what about my mother?

    • A performer in a furry deer costume sits startled on a bed, with clothes racks behind.

Director · 2018 · La Máquina del Arte, Santiago de Chile

A comedy by Carmen Amador, who started writing under Juan Radrigán’s mentorship, about identity as something built through our relationships. Sol and Fede set out on a journey of self-discovery without leaving their room: in a dream, they are visited by the ghosts of their parents, and even by their own older selves. The bedroom, where we are most honestly ourselves, slowly turns into a dream (or a nightmare) that the audience witnesses.

  • Festival de Dramaturgia Interescuelas Juan Radrigán

    Juan Radrigán Inter-School Playwriting Festival

    • Festival logo: a pair of glasses under the name “Festival de Dramaturgia Interescuelas Juan Radrigán”.
    • Four members of the third-edition team toast with red wine under red and white bunting.
    • The fourth-edition team poses together, holding a tote bag with the festival logo.

Production team · 2015–2018 · Universidad Mayor drama school, Santiago de Chile

An inter-school playwriting festival for drama students, named after Chilean playwright Juan Radrigán. I joined its production team for the second edition. As a new team, we brought in experienced theater professionals, raised the prizes, looked for more funding and built collaborations between drama schools. Submissions grew from 10 texts in the first edition to 70 in my last one, and the drama school’s support grew every year, funding staged readings, guest artists and the award ceremony. The festival is now in its twelfth year, still on the course we set.

  • On stage

    • Six Characters in Search of an Author, with Gabriel as The Little Girl: under blue light, one performer pushes another’s head toward a yellow inflatable pool on a table.
    • Gabriel as Glagolyev in Platonov, parading across the stage to show off the costume: white hair, large glasses, burgundy outfit, a sheet held overhead.
    • Locutorio: two performers inside a lit glass box on a dark stage, their reflections multiplied in the glass.
    • Signorina Giulia: an ensemble in blond wigs and folk costumes surrounds a performer bending backwards.
